Snacking Makes Up 33% of Daily Sugar Intake, Adds Up to Another Meal

The average American adult consumes nearly ¼ of their total daily calories through snacks and about ⅓ of total daily added sugars, a new study has found. The amount of calories consumed by snacking adds up to an extra meal each day – but one with little nutritional value.

“Snacks are contributing a meal’s worth of intake to what we eat without it actually being a meal,” said Christopher Taylor, senior study author. “... if you eat a meal of what you eat for snacks, it becomes a completely different scenario of, generally, carbohydrates, sugars, not much protein, not much fruit, not a vegetable.”

The study involved data from surveys of more than 20,000 people with results showing that Americans average between 400-500 calories in snacks each day. Snacks most commonly consisted of convenience foods high in carbs and fats, sweets, and alcoholic or non-alcoholic drinks with vegetables lagging far, far behind.

Though snacking isn’t bad in itself, “the magnitude of the impact isn’t realized until you actually look at it,” said Taylor. He adds that planning out snacks in advance can help with healthier eating patterns because most people end up being stuck with the food options available in their environment. (Sound familiar? Wasabi Compound Could Improve Memory, Cognitive Function

The main bioactive compound in wasabi – known as 6-methylsulfinyl hexyl isothiocyanate (6-MSITC) – may help improve memory in older adults, a recent study has found. It was specifically shown to improve both working and episodic memory after a period of 12 weeks as compared to a placebo.

Wasabi is a spicy root commonly used in Japanese cuisine. Its main compound – 6-MSITC – has already demonstrated anti-inflammatory and antioxidant properties in previous research, and some studies have indicated that it may benefit cognitive function in middle-aged adults.

The latest study sought to determine if these beneficial effects for brain function would carry over to older adults. It involved 72 healthy adults aged 60-80 who were randomly assigned to take a tablet containing 6-MSITC or a placebo tablet every day for 12 weeks.

At the end of the study, participants in the 6-MSITC group showed significant improvements in memory performance on cognitive tests, although there were no significant improvements in other cognitive areas. Overall, the results were positive, but larger trials are needed to confirm them.

10 Surprisingly Common Illnesses Linked to Vitamin D Deficiency

Vitamin D is an essential nutrient that is truly key for optimal health. It’s so important that not getting enough of it is linked to a number of serious health issues, including depression, schizophrenia, and osteoporosis. Respiratory infections like bronchitis and pneumonia are also more likely to occur in those who are vitamin D deficient. There’s even evidence indicating that low vitamin D levels may be implicated in dementia, breast cancer, prostate cancer, and erectile dysfunction. (More)

Exercising in Cold Weather May Have Extra Health Benefits

Exercising out in the cold may not be everyone’s idea of fun, but there is some research showing that it may have more health benefits than warm weather exercise. Running in cold weather, for example, involves more exertion and metabolic strain than running in warmer weather because of how your body has to work differently to maintain body temperature. Winter exercise can also help combat seasonal affective disorder (SAD), although experts recommend taking extra precautions, like layering up. Smoking Decreases Brain Volume, Quitting Can Help

Smoking is known to be harmful to the lungs and heart, but a new study indicates that it may also be just as bad for the brain. More specifically, cigarette smoking was linked to brain shrinkage (gray matter loss) with the damage accumulating the longer smoking continued. Brain shrinkage raises the risk of cognitive decline and dementia, but the good news is that quitting a smoking habit can stop the loss of brain volume, although the damage cannot be reversed. Larger Waist Circumference Linked to Higher Infertility Risk

Infertility is a fairly common issue, affecting an estimated 1 in 7 couples, and often involves a variety of factors. Obesity and body mass index (BMI) have long been linked to infertility, although research into their exact effect has been inconclusive. A new study now shows that waist circumference may be another way to determine the possible effects of weight on fertility with every extra 1 cm of waist measurement corresponding to a 3% higher risk of infertility. Hidden Health Dangers of Indoor Air Pollutants + Top 13 “Worst Offenders”

Indoor air pollutants are an often overlooked health hazard that can be present at concentrations 2-5 times higher than outdoor air pollutants. Not surprisingly, indoor air toxins can contribute to a host of respiratory problems and may also raise the risk of cancer, liver problems, hormone issues, and more. Some of the most likely pollutants to be present in your home include formaldehyde, dust mites and other allergens, toxic cleaning chemicals, fragrance chemicals, and even bacteria or viruses. Compelling Health Fact

Cartilage is a unique type of tissue that doesn’t contain blood vessels or nerves. It’s made up of an almost gel-like “matrix” and acts as a shock absorber to protect your bones and joints. Because it has no blood vessels, cartilage is slow to heal and can’t always repair itself after damage.
